MRC CFO finds creative solution to keep family connected despite distance

April 18, 2022

The term “social distancing” has become a normal part of our vocabulary in recent years. Family time at the Stephens household has changed a little bit too. During the early days of the pandemic, Don Stephens, MRC’s Chief Financial Officer, came up with a unique way to spend time together, despite distance. Each week, he and his wife Laurie sit down at their dining room table, along with cameras and tablets pointed at various areas of the table, for a long distance game of 42 via Zoom. On the other end of those devices is Don’s father in West Texas and his brother in Florida who instruct Don or Laurie as to which of their dominoes to play when it’s their turn. Stephens says that the period of stay-at-home orders initially sparked the creativity and they’ve had so much fun, they haven’t stopped.

“We look forward to our weekly night of 42.  My only regret is that it took the pandemic for us to think of this way to get together and play.  This has definitely brought us closer as a family.”
