Arbor Oaks residents do their part to save the Monarch butterfly

Share on:    The residents of Arbor Oaks Independent Living Community at Crestview planted milkweed this spring around a new pergola built at the community. They hoped to attract the Monarch butterfly, whose numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years. Monarchs lay their eggs on the milkweed plant so their caterpillars can feed on the leaves.

The group has been successful in attracting the butterflies and now are monitoring a good number of chrysalis, from which beautiful adult Monarchs are beginning to emerge. They even help the butterflies get airborne by providing a safe place to rest while their wings dry after emerging from the chrysalis. Sometimes, that safe place can be on the residents themselves!
